About TapToConvert
TapToConvert is a file converter that does its work in your browser instead of on a server.
When you convert a file here, the page reads it from your disk into memory, converts it with code running in the tab, and offers the result as a download. The file is not sent anywhere. There is no account, and nothing about your files is stored. The exception is the small set of conversions described below, which need a server.
What does the converting
Images use the decoder and encoder built into your browser, plus small open-source libraries for formats browsers do not read on their own: heic2any for HEIC and HEIF, UTIF for TIFF and PDF.js for PDF pages. Audio and video use ffmpeg.wasm, a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg. Those libraries are loaded from the jsDelivr CDN only when a conversion needs them.
Conversions that use our server
Some conversions need full desktop programs to come out right: office documents and e-books (DOCX to PDF, EPUB to MOBI), design and vector files (PSD, AI, EMF), some font formats, and web pages saved as PDF. Those programs cannot run in a browser tab. For these conversions, and only these, the file is uploaded to our conversion server, converted with LibreOffice, Calibre, Ghostscript, Inkscape, ImageMagick, Chromium or a similar open-source program in a private temporary folder with no internet access, and deleted together with the result the moment the result is sent back. Each of those pages says so above the converter. Files up to 25 MB are accepted.
Very large videos are limited by the memory a browser allows a single tab, typically around 2 GB, and less on phones.
How it is paid for
The site is free and supported by advertising. Because most conversions happen on your device, there are no server costs per file, which is what lets it stay free without limits on file size or count. Server conversions have a size limit and a fair-use limit per hour to keep their cost under control.
