How Video to MP3 works

Drop one or more video files and the soundtrack of each is saved as an MP3 that plays on every phone, car stereo and music app. The picture is discarded, so a lecture, interview, concert recording or music video becomes a small audio file you can listen to anywhere.

The audio is encoded at 192 kbps by default, which is transparent for most listeners, and you can choose a higher or lower bitrate. If the video has several audio tracks, the first one is used. Tags such as title and artist are copied where the video has them.

Extraction runs on your device with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so your recordings are never uploaded. The engine, about 32 MB, downloads the first time and is cached, after which a typical video takes a few seconds per minute of sound.

This tool converts video files you have on your device. It does not download videos from YouTube or other websites.

Each MP3 is named after its video, so a folder of recordings stays easy to match up. The MP3 is usually a small fraction of the video's size: an hour of sound at 192 kbps is about 86 MB, whatever the resolution of the picture was, and at 128 kbps it is about 58 MB. MP3 plays in every car, phone, smart speaker and music app, which is why it is the usual choice even though M4A and Opus are slightly more efficient.

When to use it

Pull audio from video to listen to recorded lectures and talks on the go, to use a recording as a podcast episode, to get the song from a music video you made, to transcribe an interview, or to keep only the sound of a voice message sent as video.

For spoken word, 96 or 128 kbps is plenty and makes much smaller files; for music, keep 192 kbps or choose 320.

It is slow on a phone

Very long videos take a while on phones. A computer is faster, or trim the part you need first.

The file type is not supported

Rare formats may not be recognised by extension. Convert the video to MP4 first, then extract the MP3.

Is it safe to do this online?

With most online tools, "online" means your file is uploaded to a company's server, processed there and kept for a while before it is deleted. Here it is not. The page downloads the tool's code to your browser, and your file is read and processed inside the tab on your own device. It is never sent to TapToConvert or anyone else.

You can check this yourself: once the page and its engine have loaded, turn off Wi-Fi and the tool still works. That also means there is no queue, no daily limit and no file size cap set by a server; the only limit is the memory your browser gives a single tab.
