How Unlock PDF works

PDFs can be locked in two ways. An open password stops anyone reading the file without it. A permissions password lets anyone read the file but blocks printing, copying text or editing. This tool removes both and saves a normal PDF that opens without a password and can be printed and copied freely.

If the PDF asks for a password when you open it, type that password in the box; without it the file cannot be decrypted, and no honest tool can get round that. If the PDF opens normally but will not let you print or copy, leave the box empty: those restrictions are removed without a password.

Decryption is done by qpdf, an open-source PDF toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside this tab. The password you type is used only on your device and is never sent anywhere. The pages themselves are not changed in any way; only the encryption is taken off.

Only unlock PDFs that you own or have permission to use, such as your own bank statements, payslips or documents a colleague sent you with a password.

When to use it

People unlock PDFs to stop typing a password every time they open their own statements, to print a document that blocks printing, to copy text out of a report, or to merge, split or compress a protected file with other tools that cannot open it otherwise.

If you still need protection, unlock the PDF, make your changes with the other PDF tools, then add a new password with Protect PDF at the end.

About the PDF toolkit

Unlock, protect and flatten, and the final step of compression, use qpdf, a long-established open-source PDF toolkit that many desktop programs and servers rely on, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs in this tab. It loads the first time you use one of these tools, about 1.3 MB, and is cached. qpdf works on the internal structure of the file: it can encrypt and decrypt with the PDF standard's own methods, draw form fields into the page, and rewrite objects more compactly, all without re-rendering the pages. Because it runs on your device, passwords and the documents they protect never pass through a server, which is the point of protecting them in the first place.

"That password is not correct"

Check capital letters and spaces. Bank and payroll PDFs often use a date of birth or part of an account number; the email that came with the file usually says which.

"This PDF needs its password"

The file has an open password. Type it in the Password box and press Unlock again.

The file will not load at all

It may be damaged or not really a PDF. Try opening it in your PDF reader first.

How to use Unlock PDF, step by step

1. Press "Choose a PDF" or drag PDFs onto the box.
2. Set the options if you need to; the defaults suit most uses.
3. Press "Unlock PDF". The work happens on your device.
4. Save the result with its download button.

Is it safe to do this online?

With most online tools, "online" means your file is uploaded to a company's server, processed there and kept for a while before it is deleted. Here it is not. The page downloads the tool's code to your browser, and your file is read and processed inside the tab on your own device. It is never sent to TapToConvert or anyone else.

You can check this yourself: once the page and its engine have loaded, turn off Wi-Fi and the tool still works. That also means there is no queue, no daily limit and no file size cap set by a server; the only limit is the memory your browser gives a single tab.
