What is a .kml file?
A .kml file is a KML geographic data. Its registered MIME type is application/vnd.google-earth.kml+xml, which places it in the application or document family of formats.
KML stands for Keyhole Markup Language.
Technically it is a specialised form of application/xml (the .rng format), so tools that understand that format can often read at least part of it.

How to open KML files
| Windows | KML files are plain text, so Notepad opens them: right-click the file, choose Open with, then Notepad. Notepad++ and VS Code are free and show long files more comfortably. |
