What is a .ldif file?
A .ldif file is a LDIF address book. Its registered MIME type is text/x-ldif, which places it in the text family of formats.
LDIF stands for LDAP Data Interchange Format.
Technically it is a specialised form of text/plain (the .asc format), so tools that understand that format can often read at least part of it.

How to open LDIF files
