What happens when you convert EOT to WOFF

    • eot2ttf unpacks the TrueType font inside the EOT on our conversion server.
    • FontForge then writes it as a WOFF for websites, with each table compressed.
    • WOFF is for websites: load it with @font-face in CSS. It cannot be installed on a computer.
    • This conversion runs on our server: the file is uploaded, converted, and deleted together with the result as soon as the result has been sent back to you. Nothing is kept. Files up to 25 MB are accepted.

How to convert EOT to WOFF online

    1. Press "Choose EOT files" and select one or more files, or drag them onto the box. Files up to 25 MB each can be converted.
    2. There are no settings to choose: the converter keeps everything the target format can hold.
    3. Press "Convert to WOFF". The file is uploaded to our conversion server, converted in a few seconds, and deleted together with the result as soon as the result is sent back.
    4. Save each WOFF with its download button. Our server has already deleted both your EOT and the WOFF by then.

    Why convert EOT to WOFF?

EOT files usually come from web fonts for old versions of Internet Explorer. People convert them to WOFF because WOFF is the compressed font format every browser loads, so web pages download fonts faster.

In short, EOT is good at what it was made for, and WOFF is the more practical choice when the file has to open, upload or print somewhere else. EOT loads only in Internet Explorer, through CSS; no current browser or operating system uses it, while WOFF loads in every browser through CSS; cannot be installed on a computer.

    About EOT and WOFF files

    What is an EOT file?

EOT was Microsoft's web font format for Internet Explorer, from version 4 onwards. It wraps a TrueType font with a list of sites allowed to use it. Every other browser went with WOFF, so EOT only matters for sites that still support old Internet Explorer.

    What is a WOFF file?

WOFF is a TrueType or OpenType font with each table compressed and a small header added, which makes web fonts smaller to download. The font inside is unchanged.

EOT to WOFF not working? Common problems

    • "Files up to 25 MB can be converted." Server conversions have a size limit. A font that large usually holds several scripts; subset it to the characters you need first.
    • "The conversion took too long and was stopped." Very long or complex files can pass the 90 second limit. Split the file and convert the parts.
    • "This file is not really in EOT format." The converter checks every file before it runs anything, so a file of another format renamed to .eot is refused. Choose the page for its real format.

Convert EOT to WOFF from the command line

FontForge does the same on your own computer:

    fontforge -lang=py -c "import fontforge, sys; fontforge.open(sys.argv[1]).generate(sys.argv[2])" input.eot output.woff

Converting on your own computer keeps the file entirely local, which is worth it for very large or very sensitive documents. For everything else, the converter on this page does it without installing anything.

    EOT to WOFF converter FAQ

Will I lose quality converting EOT to WOFF?

No. Every glyph, kerning pair and feature is kept; only the packaging changes.

Why is the WOFF a different size from the EOT?

A WOFF compresses each table, so it is usually smaller than the unpacked font.

    Are my EOT files uploaded?

Yes, for this conversion. A faithful EOT to WOFF conversion needs eot2ttf and FontForge, the open-source font editor, which cannot run in a browser. The file travels over an encrypted connection, is converted in a private temporary folder, and is deleted together with the WOFF as soon as the result has been sent back to you. We do not keep, read or share it.

Can I convert several EOT files to WOFF at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like; they are converted one after another and each gets its own download button.

How do I open a WOFF file?

WOFF loads in every browser through CSS; cannot be installed on a computer. WOFF is common for fonts served by websites.

Is this EOT to WOFF converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. Because this conversion uses our server, there is a fair-use limit of 25 MB per file and a number of files per hour, which stops the service being overloaded.

Can I convert EOT to WOFF on my phone?

Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android. The conversion happens on our server, so it is as fast on a phone as on a computer; the WOFF is saved to your Downloads folder.
