What is a Pages file?
A Pages file only opens in Apple's Pages app, which does not exist for Windows or Android. That is why Pages files are so often converted to PDF or DOCX before they are shared.

DOCX has been Word's default format since 2007. Like XLSX it is a ZIP archive of XML files, which is how its text can be read without Word.
