How Remove EXIF Data works

This tool removes the hidden metadata from a photo while leaving the picture itself untouched. It does not open and re-save the image, which would cost quality. Instead it rebuilds the file around the same compressed image data, simply leaving the metadata out, so the photo is identical pixel for pixel and only the metadata is gone.

In JPG files it removes EXIF (camera, settings, date and GPS location), XMP and IPTC data, Photoshop information and comments. It keeps the colour profile, so colours look the same. If a phone photo relied on its rotation setting to display upright, a tiny block holding only that rotation is written back, so the photo is not suddenly sideways. In PNG files it removes text, date and EXIF chunks; in WebP files, the EXIF and XMP chunks.

Everything happens in this tab. For a privacy tool that matters: the photo, and the location you are trying to remove, never leave your device. Several photos can be cleaned at once, each with its own download.

The cleaned file keeps its name with -clean added, so it never overwrites the original. The file usually shrinks by the size of the metadata, from a few hundred bytes to tens of kilobytes for photos with an embedded preview image.

When to use it

Clean photos before posting them on marketplaces, forums, dating sites or social networks that keep the original file, before emailing pictures of your home or children, before publishing images on a website, or before sending photos to someone you do not know.

Check the result with the EXIF Viewer: it should show no GPS location. Messaging apps often strip metadata already, but email, cloud links and file transfers usually send the original with everything in it.

HEIC and other formats are not supported here. Convert the photo to JPG first; converting on this site removes metadata as well.

The photo turned sideways

It should not: the rotation is kept. If it happens, open the photo in another viewer; some old programs ignore rotation settings entirely.

Is it safe to do this online?

With most online tools, "online" means your file is uploaded to a company's server, processed there and kept for a while before it is deleted. Here it is not. The page downloads the tool's code to your browser, and your file is read and processed inside the tab on your own device. It is never sent to TapToConvert or anyone else.

You can check this yourself: once the page and its engine have loaded, turn off Wi-Fi and the tool still works. That also means there is no queue, no daily limit and no file size cap set by a server; the only limit is the memory your browser gives a single tab.
