What happens when you convert TTF to BMP

• A font file cannot become a BMP by itself, so this makes a specimen: a sample sheet that shows the font. fontforge, the open-source font editor, reads the font's name and the characters it contains, and Chromium, the open-source browser behind Chrome, draws the sheet with the TTF on our conversion server, which ImageMagick saves as a BMP.
• The sheet shows the font's name, the alphabet in capitals and small letters, the digits and common punctuation, and the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." at 72, 48, 36, 24, 18 and 14 pixels, on a white page 1,280 pixels wide.
• Only characters the font really has are shown, so nothing is filled in from another font. A font without Latin letters, such as an icon, symbol or Chinese font, shows the first 240 characters it has instead.
• The font is shown as it is, in the one weight and style the TTF holds; bold or italic are not added artificially.
• The BMP is a 24-bit bitmap with no compression.
• This conversion runs on our server: the file is uploaded, converted, and deleted together with the result as soon as the result has been sent back to you. Nothing is kept. Files up to 25 MB are accepted.

Why convert TTF to BMP?

TTF files usually come from installing fonts on a computer and embedding them in documents. People convert them to BMP to preview a font before installing it, to show a client or a team what a typeface looks like, or to post a sample on a website or in a chat, where a font file cannot be shown.

How to convert TTF to BMP on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

On Windows

Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, drag your TTF files in from File Explorer, and press Convert. Each BMP is saved to your Downloads folder.

On a Mac

Safari, Chrome and Firefox all work. Drag the TTF files from Finder onto the drop zone and the BMP files land in Downloads.

On iPhone and iPad

Open the page in Safari and tap Choose TTF files. You can pick from Photos or from the Files app. The converted BMP appears in Files, in the Downloads folder; to put it in your photo library, open it there, tap Share and choose Save Image.

On Android

Open the page in Chrome, tap Choose TTF files and pick them from Files or your gallery. The BMP is saved to the Download folder, where any file manager can find it.

What is a TTF file?

TrueType was created by Apple and adopted by Microsoft, which is why every desktop system installs TTF fonts natively. The outlines are made of quadratic curves.

What is a BMP file?

BMP usually stores pixels with no compression at all, so a 12 megapixel photo is about 36 MB. That size is the price of being readable by almost any program ever written for Windows.

TTF to BMP not working? Common problems

• "Files up to 25 MB can be converted." Server conversions have a size limit. A font that large usually holds several scripts; subset it to the characters you need first.
• "The font could not be drawn." The file may be damaged, or be a font collection (.ttc) or a web font renamed; convert WOFF and WOFF2 fonts to TTF first.
• "This file is not really in TTF format." The converter checks every file before it runs anything, so a file of another format renamed to .ttf is refused. Choose the page for its real format.
