What happens when you convert ZIP to 7Z
- The ZIP is unpacked and packed again as a 7Z by 7-Zip, the open-source archiver, on our conversion server, with every file and folder, their names and dates.
- 7-Zip compresses with LZMA2 at its normal level, which usually makes a smaller archive than ZIP, especially for text, documents and program files. Photos and videos, which are already compressed, hardly shrink.
- Symbolic links are stored as links. Paths that would climb out of the archive folder, and links that point outside it, are dropped for safety, as 7-Zip does by default.
- Password-protected archives cannot be converted, because they cannot be opened without the password. Archives that unpack to more than 1 GB, or hold more than 20,000 files, are refused.
- This conversion runs on our server: the file is uploaded, converted, and deleted together with the result as soon as the result has been sent back to you. Nothing is kept. Files up to 25 MB are accepted.

What is a ZIP file?
ZIP is the one archive format every operating system opens without extra software, which is why converting other archives to ZIP is so common.
What is a 7Z file?
7Z usually compresses tighter than ZIP by using the LZMA algorithm across files. The trade-off is that fewer built-in tools can open it.
ZIP to 7Z not working? Common problems
- "Files up to 25 MB can be converted." Server conversions have a size limit. Split the archive, or pack it with 7-Zip on your own computer.
- "The conversion took too long and was stopped." Very long or complex files can pass the 90 second limit. Split the file and convert the parts.
- "The archive could not be converted." It may be password protected, damaged, or unpack to more than 1 GB.
