How Convert Video for Mobile works
A video straight from a camera or a download is often far bigger than a phone screen needs, and in a format an older or simpler phone cannot play. This converter makes a mobile version: scaled down to a phone-sized resolution, encoded with the simplest widely supported settings, and small enough to store, send and stream on a slow connection.
The video is encoded as H.264 Baseline profile, the most basic H.264 profile, which every phone that plays H.264 can decode, including many basic phones and older smartphones. Baseline uses no B-frames and no advanced features, so it also plays smoothly on slow processors. Sound becomes stereo AAC at 96 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and the frame rate is capped at 30.
Choose the size for the screen: 480p fits the picture inside 854 by 480 pixels, 360p inside 640 by 360 and 240p inside 426 by 240, with portrait videos fitted the other way round and nothing ever enlarged. Bitrate caps keep files predictable: at most about 12 MB per minute at 480p, 7 MB at 360p and 4 MB at 240p, and usually less.
MP4 plays on every smartphone. 3GP is the format basic phones and older feature phones list among their video formats; the file holds the same H.264 and AAC, so choose it only when a phone refuses the MP4. The very oldest phones play only H.263 video, which this converter does not write.
The conversion runs on your device with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The engine downloads the first time, about 32 MB, and is cached for later visits. Every frame is re-encoded, which takes a while: in our tests a recent laptop needed about two minutes for each minute of full HD video, smaller sizes are quicker, and phones are slower. Your videos are never uploaded, and several can be converted in one go.

When to use it

About these device presets
Every device plays H.264 video with AAC sound in an MP4 file, but not every H.264 file. Encoders describe a file with a profile, which says which compression features it uses, and a level, which caps its size, frame rate and bitrate, and a device's decoder is built for particular profiles and levels. A file above them may stutter, play without picture or be refused. Each preset here sets the profile, level, largest size and bitrate cap that its devices are known to handle, using x264, the widely used open-source H.264 encoder, inside ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The encoding quality is set by a constant rate factor, so simple scenes take fewer bits and complex ones more, within the cap. Everything happens on your own device, so private videos are never uploaded.

The phone says the format is not supported
Try the 3GP format, and the 240p size for very small screens. Phones that only play H.263 cannot play these files.
Text in the video is hard to read
Choose a larger size. Fine text needs 480p.
The file is still large
Long videos stay large even at small sizes. Choose 240p, or trim the video first.

Is it safe to do this online?
