What happens when you convert JPG to AVIF

• AVIF often comes out at half the size of a JPG of the same quality or less. Current browsers show it, but many desktop programs, older phones and upload forms cannot open it yet.

How to convert JPG to AVIF on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

On Windows

Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, drag your JPG files in from File Explorer, and press Convert. Each AVIF is saved to your Downloads folder.

On a Mac

Safari, Chrome and Firefox all work. Drag the JPG files from Finder onto the drop zone and the AVIF files land in Downloads.

On iPhone and iPad

Open the page in Safari and tap Choose JPG files. You can pick from Photos or from the Files app. The converted AVIF appears in Files, in the Downloads folder; to put it in your photo library, open it there, tap Share and choose Save Image.

On Android

Open the page in Chrome, tap Choose JPG files and pick them from Files or your gallery. The AVIF is saved to the Download folder, where any file manager can find it.

What is a JPG file?

JPG discards fine detail the eye is least sensitive to, which is why a photo shrinks to a tenth of its raw size but text and sharp edges pick up blocky artefacts. Every re-save at a lossy setting throws away a little more.

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF uses the AV1 video codec to compress still images and often beats WebP by another 20 percent. Encoding it is slow and many desktop programs cannot open it yet.

JPG to AVIF not working? Common problems

• "Files up to 25 MB can be converted." Server conversions have a size limit. Save the image at a smaller size first.
• "The conversion took too long and was stopped." Very long or complex files can pass the 90 second limit. Split the file and convert the parts.
• "This file is not really in JPG format." The converter checks every file before it runs anything, so a file of another format renamed to .jpg is refused. Choose the page for its real format.
