What happens when you convert JPG to HEIF
- ImageMagick, the open-source image toolkit, reads the JPG on our conversion server and saves it as a HEIF, compressed with HEVC at quality 80, the same kind of file as a HEIC with the extension Android cameras use.
- HEIF is usually about half the size of a JPG of the same quality. It opens on iPhones, iPads and Macs, and on Windows with the free HEIF Image and HEVC Video extensions; most browsers and many upload forms cannot open it.
- Photos are turned upright using the rotation stored in them, so the result is always the right way up.

Why convert JPG to HEIF?

How to convert JPG to HEIF on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android
On Windows

On a Mac

About JPG and HEIF files
What is a JPG file?
JPG discards fine detail the eye is least sensitive to, which is why a photo shrinks to a tenth of its raw size but text and sharp edges pick up blocky artefacts. Every re-save at a lossy setting throws away a little more.
What is a HEIF file?
HEIF is the container standard and HEIC is the name Apple gives files that use it with HEVC compression. Android phones that shoot in this format usually label the file .heif.
JPG to HEIF not working? Common problems
- "Files up to 25 MB can be converted." Server conversions have a size limit. Save the image at a smaller size first.
- "The conversion took too long and was stopped." Very long or complex files can pass the 90 second limit. Split the file and convert the parts.
- "This file is not really in JPG format." The converter checks every file before it runs anything, so a file of another format renamed to .jpg is refused. Choose the page for its real format.
