How Resize PDF works

Resizing places every page of the PDF onto a new page of the size you choose. The content is scaled to fit, up or down, keeping its proportions, and centred, so nothing is stretched or cut off. Where the shapes differ, for example Letter content on an A4 page, a small white band is left at the top and bottom or the sides.

With Match each page, landscape pages go onto landscape paper and portrait pages onto portrait paper. Choose Portrait or Landscape to force every page one way.

Pages are embedded as they are rather than turned into images, so text stays sharp, vector drawings stay vector and the file size barely changes. What is not carried over is the interactive layer: links, form fields and comments on the original pages. The work is done by pdf-lib inside this tab.

The resized file is named after the original with the new size added, such as report-a4.pdf. Printers and copy shops usually print a PDF at the size its pages say, so a Letter document printed on A4 paper either shrinks or loses its edges; resizing first puts the content exactly where you expect it. The same is true for upload portals in government, universities and courts that insist on A4 or Letter pages. Several PDFs can be resized at once, each with its own download. Pages that are already the chosen size are simply copied onto an identical page.

When to use it

Resize PDFs when a document made in the US must be printed or submitted on A4, or the other way round, when mixed page sizes need to be consistent, or when a portal rejects a file because its pages are not the required size.

Resizing drops form fields. If the answers in a form must be kept, fill it in and use Flatten PDF first, which turns them into ordinary page content.

About these PDF tools

The page tools, from merge and split to crop, resize, watermark and page numbers, use pdf-lib, an open-source JavaScript library that reads the structure of a PDF and writes a new one. Because it works on the page objects themselves rather than on pictures of them, text stays text, fonts stay embedded and vector drawings stay sharp, and nothing is added to your pages that you did not ask for. None of these tools edit what is already printed on a page: to change wording or fill a form, use a PDF editor. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first, since the pages cannot be read without the password. Every tool works on a copy, so the file on your device is never changed.

There are white bands at the edges

The original pages have a different shape from the new size, so the content is fitted inside with a margin rather than stretched.

Links stopped working

Links and form fields are not carried over when pages are resized.

The file will not open

It is password protected. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF.

How to use Resize PDF, step by step

1. Press "Choose a PDF" or drag PDFs onto the box.
2. Set the options if you need to; the defaults suit most uses.
3. Press "Resize pages". The work happens on your device.
4. Save the result with its download button.

Is it safe to do this online?

With most online tools, "online" means your file is uploaded to a company's server, processed there and kept for a while before it is deleted. Here it is not. The page downloads the tool's code to your browser, and your file is read and processed inside the tab on your own device. It is never sent to TapToConvert or anyone else.

You can check this yourself: once the page and its engine have loaded, turn off Wi-Fi and the tool still works. That also means there is no queue, no daily limit and no file size cap set by a server; the only limit is the memory your browser gives a single tab.
