What happens when you convert EPS to JPG

• The EPS is rendered by Ghostscript, the standard open-source PostScript interpreter, on our conversion server at 300 dpi, cropped to the artwork's bounding box. Very large artwork is rendered at a lower resolution so the longest side stays within 6,000 pixels.
• JPG has no transparency, so the background is white. The JPG is saved at 92 percent quality.
• At 300 dpi, artwork 10 cm wide becomes about 1,180 pixels wide: enough for print at that size, or to scale down for screens.
• PostScript is a programming language, so Ghostscript runs it in its safe mode, where the file cannot read or write anything else on the server.
• This conversion runs on our server: the file is uploaded, converted, and deleted together with the result as soon as the result has been sent back to you. Nothing is kept. Files up to 25 MB are accepted.

How to convert EPS to JPG online

In short, EPS is good at what it was made for, and JPG is the more practical choice when the file has to open, upload or print somewhere else. EPS does not open in browsers; Illustrator, Inkscape and Affinity Designer open it, and macOS Preview converts it to PDF, while JPG opens in every browser and image viewer.

How to convert EPS to JPG on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

On Windows

Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, drag your EPS files in from File Explorer, and press Convert. Each JPG is saved to your Downloads folder. Paint can also re-save an image as JPG with Save as, provided Windows can open the EPS in the first place.

On a Mac

Safari, Chrome and Firefox all work. Drag the EPS files from Finder onto the drop zone and the JPG files land in Downloads.

On iPhone and iPad

Open the page in Safari and tap Choose EPS files. You can pick from Photos or from the Files app. The converted JPG appears in Files, in the Downloads folder; to put it in your photo library, open it there, tap Share and choose Save Image.

On Android

Open the page in Chrome, tap Choose EPS files and pick them from Files or your gallery. The JPG is saved to the Download folder, where any file manager can find it.

Best settings for EPS to JPG

There are no settings: the artwork is rendered at 300 dpi, cropped to its bounding box, which suits print at the EPS's own size and gives plenty of pixels to scale down for screens. Poster-sized artwork is rendered at a lower resolution so the image stays within 6,000 pixels on its longest side.

Choose PNG instead if the artwork is a logo that needs a transparent background.

What is an EPS file?

An EPS is a small PostScript program that draws one page of artwork, with a bounding box so it can be placed inside other documents. Printers and designers still ask for it, but it is gradually being replaced by PDF and SVG.

What is a JPG file?

JPG discards fine detail the eye is least sensitive to, which is why a photo shrinks to a tenth of its raw size but text and sharp edges pick up blocky artefacts. Every re-save at a lossy setting throws away a little more.

EPS to JPG not working? Common problems

• "Files up to 25 MB can be converted." Server conversions have a size limit. Compress the images in the document, or split it, and try again.
• "The conversion took too long and was stopped." Very long or complex documents can exceed the time limit. Split the document and convert the parts.
• The EPS will not convert. It may be damaged, or use features the converter does not allow for safety, such as reading other files.
